The second episode boss hit a scripting snag or two that seemed related to the music, and I stunlocked his second form with the gas grenades, which was amusing but I never got to see his attacks.

Other times I'd be starved for healing for huge stretches. Sometimes I'd be floating on a massive armor pool for several levels at a time (especially in the first two episodes) and take literally zero HP damage.

My only real gripe is that the difficulty curve needs a little tuning. A couple entities could have used an extra animation frame or two, but the consistency of the game's look is great.

Overall the aesthetic and the music are top notch. Final boss was fantastically intense too. There's already a big enemy roster though, so that's just me daydreaming, really. While the first game's weapons and enemies felt a bit too close to classic Doom, this has an arsenal and set of baddies that feel far weirder and more distinct.Įach of the five episodes mixed things up great, although I'd have liked to see perhaps some unique enemy types for the final episode. Had a great time, and it feels like a huge leap ahead of the original Shrine. Lemme know if you have the same feelings or not if you complete the wad in full.I played through all of this (minus secret levels) on the normal difficulty level earlier. And yeah, I just didn't want the shotgun to get too boring. Overall, though, it seems great so far and was definitely worth the wait. Perhaps if I hadn't been given that so early, the beginnings of the second level wouldn't have been so trivial a challenge. On top of that, the laser gun thing seemed like it didn't need to be introduced in the first level, given how powerful it seems to be.

My biggest gripe so far is that the first level alone seems to introduce about half of the weapon arsenal, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I would've preferred being limited to maybe 3 weapons at a maximum and learning to use those before being given any new guns. The gameplay feels good overall, with a varied beastiary and satisfying weapons, but I feel like the pacing could be slightly better. The combination of a muted color scheme with some vibrant bits here and there lend a sense of grimness to the whole thing, which I found lovely. And the music works very well with that. The art style is obviously the highlight - I could tell from every pixel that you put some serious effort into crafting such a unique aesthetic. Having played the first 4 levels, here are my first impressions:
